A real incident, not a textbook exercise
It is 22:37. You are alone in the NOC. A P2 lands in your queue: an access switch stopped answering the monitoring, and the eight servers behind it are down. A change was closed on that switch at 22:05.
What you will do
Read the ticket. Take the lift to the data hall. Find the rack, badge into the locked row, plug into the console. Find what failed and bring the service back. The ticket closes when the monitoring sees the switch again, the eight servers answer, the port standards hold, and the config is saved.
Part of the answer is in the rack, not on the console.
What you need
Basic Cisco IOS: interface and trunk status, access port configuration, saving the config. A keyboard, a mouse, a browser with WebGL. Nothing to install.
Controls: WASD or ZQSD to walk, left button held and drag to look, E to use what you are looking at.
Stuck?
Sarah is on call. Press C to phone her. She tells you what to look at next, not what to type.
sT re-reads the ticket. Esc opens the menu.
